Taking your dog to Al Bateen Public Beach, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's second-largest beach, and dogs are prohibited under emirate law. The widely repeated claim that dogs are tolerated at the far end early in the morning traces to one anonymous 2013 post and a page its publisher has since deleted.

Quick answer

No — dogs are not permitted at Al Bateen Public Beach.

The rules

Dogs are not permitted at Al Bateen Public Beach.

This is a municipal beach where dogs are prohibited, not merely unwelcome. The rule is emirate-wide rather than a decision taken here, so it is not something staff on the day can waive.

Before you bring any dog to a UAE beach

Under Federal Law No. 22 of 2016, several breeds are classed as dangerous animals in the UAE, including Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers and Boxers alongside pit bull types. The rules apply wherever you go, not just here.

Check the federal breed list before you travel.

The open question: Is a no-pets sign posted at Al Bateen, and has anyone been turned away recently?

Sixteen of the municipality's 84 new beach signboards went to Al Bateen but the content was never published. There is no dated, first-hand, post-redevelopment report of a dog at this beach in either direction. A reader who has been recently can settle this in one line.

Best time to go

The UAE beach season runs October to April. Outside it, go at sunrise or after sunset only — sand can burn paw pads within seconds.

The five-second test

Press the back of your hand to the sand for five seconds. If you cannot hold it there, your dog cannot walk on it. More on heat and paws.

What to bring

  • More water than you think, plus a collapsible bowl
  • Shade — UAE beaches have little natural cover
  • Paw balm, and boots if your dog will tolerate them
  • A towel — salt water needs rinsing off
  • Waste bags
  • A leash — assume mandatory unless this page says otherwise
